China has announced a new visa-free entry policy for Canadian ordinary passport holders, starting Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The policy allows stays of up to 30 days and is set to run until December 31, 2026.
This update is mainly relevant for Canadian citizens with a Canadian passport. If you are a Canadian permanent resident travelling on a non-Canadian passport, your visa requirements can be different.
What the visa-free policy covers
According to China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry, Canadians can enter visa-free (up to 30 days) for:
-
tourism
-
business
-
visiting family/friends
-
exchange
-
transit
What it does NOT cover
This policy does not mean “all travel is visa-free.”
You should still plan for a visa if you:
-
want to stay longer than 30 days
-
plan to work or study in China
-
need a visa for another purpose not listed in the announcement
Also, visa-free travel does not guarantee entry. Border officers can still refuse entry if requirements are not met (passport validity, proof of onward travel, etc.).

FAQ
Does this apply to Canadian permanent residents?
Only if you are travelling with a Canadian passport. PR status alone does not equal a Canadian passport.
When does it start?
February 17, 2026.
How long is it valid?
Until December 31, 2026.
Reality check
This is a China entry policy change, not an immigration program. Rules can change quickly, and Canada’s travel advisory may update after the announcement. Before you book flights, confirm details using both the Chinese official notice and Travel.gc.ca guidance.
