Updated July 2026. If you’re getting your driver’s licence in Ontario, the G1 written test is your first step. It checks your knowledge of traffic rules and road signs before you’re allowed to drive with a supervising licensed driver. This guide covers the eligibility, the application steps, the current fees, and — below — a free practice quiz on traffic rules to test yourself before you go.
Quick Facts
- Test format: 40 multiple-choice questions (20 on road signs, 20 on rules of the road)
- Pass mark: at least 16 correct in each section (80%)
- Fee: $159.75 CAD for the G1 licence package (written test + your first G2 road test + 5-year licence)
- Minimum age: 16
- Where: any DriveTest Centre in Ontario — no appointment needed for the written test
- Result: pass and you get your G1 the same day
Who Can Take the G1 Test
- At least 16 years old
- Valid proof of identity and legal status in Canada (passport, PR card, or work/study permit plus supporting ID)
- An Ontario resident
- Able to pass the vision (eye) test administered on-site
Newcomers on a valid temporary or permanent status can take the G1 test — you don’t need to be a citizen or permanent resident. Bring documents that show your name, date of birth, and Ontario address (a lease, utility bill, or bank statement works for address proof).

What’s Tested: Traffic Rules Section
The 20 traffic-rules questions cover the practical rules of driving in Ontario, not just sign recognition:
- Right-of-way at intersections and four-way stops
- Speed limits by road type (school zones, residential, highway)
- Passing and lane-change rules
- Sharing the road with cyclists, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles
- What to do when an emergency vehicle approaches
- Parking and stopping rules
- Alcohol and drug limits — G1, G2 holders have a zero blood-alcohol requirement
Study the official Ontario Driver’s Handbook — it’s the exact source the exam questions are drawn from.
G1 Licence Restrictions
Passing the test gets you a G1, but it comes with real limits until you move to G2:
- You must always have a fully licensed driver (G or higher, with at least 4 years of driving experience) in the front passenger seat
- Zero blood-alcohol level while driving
- No driving on 400-series highways or other high-speed expressways
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- One passenger per available seatbelt, and your supervising driver must be the only other adult unless a family member
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the G1 test multiple choice?
Yes — every question has four answer choices with one correct answer.
How many questions are on the G1 test?
40 total: 20 on road signs and 20 on rules of the road. You need at least 16 correct in each section — passing signs but failing rules (or vice versa) means you fail the whole test.
Can G1 drivers drive on the highway?
No. G1 drivers cannot drive on 400-series highways or other high-speed expressways in Ontario.
Can I drive with a G1 licence?
Yes, but only with a fully licensed driver (G or higher) with at least 4 years of experience sitting in the front passenger seat.
Can I retake the test the same day if I fail?
No. If you fail, you must wait at least one day before retaking it, and each retake of the written test costs $16.
Can I buy a car while I only have a G1?
Yes — you can own a vehicle, but only a G2 or full G licence holder can legally drive it (with you as a G1 driver supervised in the passenger seat if applicable).
Does the G1 test expire?
Your G1 licence is valid for 5 years. You must pass the G2 road test within that window or your G1 expires and you’d need to restart the process.
