Why a Canadian Resume Looks Different
Canadian employers expect a specific format, and using the wrong one — especially one built for a different country's job market — can get an otherwise strong application filtered out before a person ever reads it. A few conventions this tool follows:
- No photo, age, or marital status. Canadian human rights law discourages employers from considering these, and including them can look inexperienced with the local market.
- Reverse-chronological order. Most recent job first, working backward. This is what Canadian recruiters and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) expect.
- One to two pages. One page for early-career applicants, up to two for 10+ years of experience. Longer rarely gets fully read.
- Achievements over duties. "Reduced order processing time by 20% by redesigning the intake form" reads stronger than "Responsible for order processing."
- Letter-size paper (8.5" x 11"), not A4. This tool's PDF export is already formatted for Letter size.
