The test at a glance
What is the Ontario G1 test?
The G1 test is the written knowledge test you pass to get a Class G1 learner’s licence in Ontario, the first step of graduated licensing. It checks that you know the rules of the road and traffic signs before you drive with a supervising driver.
It has 40 multiple-choice questions in two sections of 20: road signs, and rules of the road. You need 16 correct in each section. You take it at a DriveTest centre, along with a vision test, and if you pass you leave with your G1.
Everything on the test comes from the Official MTO Driver’s Handbook. Our study notes summarize it section by section, and our quizzes let you check yourself before you pay for the real test.

After you pass
What can you do with a G1?
A G1 lets you practise driving, but only with a fully licensed driver beside you and under strict conditions. Breaking a condition leads to a 30-day suspension.
- Your blood alcohol level must be zero.
- Your companion needs a full G licence, at least four years of driving experience and a blood alcohol level under 0.05%, and must be the only other person in the front seat.
- No driving on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways such as the QEW, Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway, unless your companion is a driving instructor.
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- Everyone in the car must have a working seatbelt.
| Stage | Minimum time | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| G1 | 12 months, or 8 with an approved driver education course | G2 road test |
| G2 | 12 months | G road test |
| Full G | At least 20 months in total | Finish within 5 years |
New to Canada
Do newcomers have to take the G1 test?
Not always. New Ontario residents can drive on a valid licence from elsewhere for 60 days. Drivers from countries with an exchange agreement may be able to swap their licence; others usually start with the G1 knowledge test, and proof of past driving experience can shorten the wait for road tests.
To take the test you need original ID showing your legal name and date of birth, and you must be an Ontario resident, not a visitor. Since May 11, 2026, applicants also declare that Ontario is their primary residence and that they are in Canada legally.
Common mistakes
Where people lose points
With no sign posted, the limit outside towns is 80 km/h, not 100.
Allowed only on roads with two or more lanes in your direction, and never on the shoulder.
The octagon is always stop, the downward triangle is always yield, a yellow diamond is a warning and orange means construction.
You need 16 in each section. A perfect signs score cannot rescue a weak rules score.
