How this simulation works
- Every attempt draws 20 sign and 20 rules questions at random from our 158-question bank.
- Like the real test, you need 16 of 20 in each part.
- You see the right answers on the results page, so every attempt is also a study session.
- Free, no account, and you can retake it as often as you like.
How close is this simulation to the real G1 test?
It uses the same structure as the real knowledge test: 40 multiple-choice questions, 20 on road signs and 20 on the rules of the road, with 16 of 20 needed in each part.
| Real test (DriveTest) | This simulation | |
|---|---|---|
| Questions | 40, multiple choice | 40, multiple choice |
| Sections | 20 signs + 20 rules | 20 signs + 20 rules |
| Pass mark | 16 of 20 in each section | 16 of 20 in each section |
| Cost | $159.75 G1 package; $16 per retest | Free |
| Questions drawn from | The ministry’s test bank | Our bank of 158, written from the MTO handbook |
A total of 32 is not enough on its own: you need 16 in each section. A great signs score cannot make up for a weak rules score.
What score should I get before going to DriveTest?
Aim for 18 or more out of 20 in each part, twice in a row. A steady score across several attempts is a better sign than one lucky result.
Since each attempt uses a new mix of questions, two strong attempts in a row mean you know the material rather than the questions.
What should I do if I score under 16 in a section?
Go back to that section’s study page, read the notes and take the full section quiz, then try the simulation again.
What do I need to bring to the G1 test?
Bring original ID that shows your legal name and date of birth, money for the $159.75 fee, and your glasses or contact lenses if you need them to drive. You also take a vision test on site.
- You must be at least 16 and an Ontario resident, not a visitor.
- Since May 11, 2026, applicants also declare that Ontario is their primary residence and that they are in Canada legally.
- Knowledge tests at DriveTest centres do not need an appointment. ServiceOntario at Bay and College in Toronto does require one.
- Fees can be paid by cash, debit or credit card.

What happens after I pass the G1 test?
You get your G1 licence and can drive with a fully licensed companion. After 12 months, or 8 months with an approved driver education course, you can take the G2 road test.
The G2 lasts at least another 12 months before the final G road test. The whole process takes at least 20 months, and you have five years to complete it. See graduated licensing in every province.
Start a new 40-question simulation. Each attempt uses different questions.
