Which benefit payment dates should newcomers know?
Start with the benefits you apply for when you arrive: the Canada Child Benefit and the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit. Both depend on filing a tax return every year.
Most federal and provincial benefits are paid by the CRA from the same tax information, so missing a return can stop several payments at once. See all CRA payment dates in one calendar.
Why do statutory holidays differ between provinces?
Employment standards are provincial, so each province and territory sets its own list. Federally regulated employers, such as banks and airlines, follow the Canada Labour Code instead.
Five holidays apply everywhere: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Canada Day, Labour Day and Christmas Day. The rest depend on where you work.
Dates come from the CRA, Service Canada and provincial governments; each page links to its source. Canadianow is independent and not affiliated with any government.
