How much overtime pay do I get for a 50-hour week?

It depends on the province. At $20 an hour, five 10-hour days pay $1,060 in Ontario (6 overtime hours) but $1,100 in BC (10 overtime hours, because BC counts every hour over 8 in a day).

Example: Ontario, 50 hours at $20
44 regular hours × $20$880
6 overtime hours × $30$180
Weekly pay$1,060
Example: British Columbia, 5 × 10-hour days at $20
40 regular hours (8 a day) × $20$800
10 overtime hours (2 a day) × $30$300
Weekly pay$1,100

What can change how much overtime I am owed?

Averaging agreements, banked time, exempt occupations and your contract can all change the result.

  • Averaging agreements let some employers average hours over several weeks.
  • Banked time (time off in lieu) is allowed in several provinces with a written agreement, usually at 1.5 hours off per overtime hour.
  • Managers, some IT professionals, farm workers and others may have different rules or no overtime.
  • Your contract can pay more than the minimum, never less.

What can I do if my employer will not pay overtime?

Keep your own record of hours, ask in writing, then file a free claim with your province’s employment standards office.

Work permit holders have the same rights; on an LMIA-based permit the employer must also respect the wage in your offer. Related: stat holiday pay.

This calculator applies provincial and federal employment standards minimums. Your contract can pay more, never less. It is general information, not legal advice.
