Iranians in Canada Receive Work Permit Extension Until March 2027

Updated on 4 March 2026, 7:33 PM EST (Toronto Time)

Thousands of Iranian nationals in Canada have been granted a significant reprieve by the Canadian government. Special work permit measures have been extended until March 2027.

The Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announcement was made on March 4, 2026, with the policy coming into effect on March 1, 2026.

Amidst the ongoing escalation of the Iran war, many Iranian citizens find themselves unable to return to their home country. In response, Canada has decided to provide them with an extended period of support.

However, the extension is exclusively available to work permit holders. Visitors and students are no longer eligible to apply under these measures.

Key Changes for Iranians in Canada

The previous special measures expired on February 28, 2026, causing uncertainty for many Iranian workers. The IRCC has now confirmed a new extension with several significant changes:

    • Only workers are eligible for the extension
    • The extension allows for up to 2 years
    • The application deadline is March 31, 2027
    • Fee waivers are no longer available

The emphasis is now on providing support to Iranian nationals who are already part of the workforce in Canada.

Eligibility for Work Permit Extension

There are strict criteria set by the IRCC for individuals to qualify for the work permit extension:

    • Hold Iranian nationality with a valid passport
    • Currently reside in Canada with a valid work permit
    • Have had an original work permit issued by February 28, 2025
    • Have not received an extension under these measures before
    • Meet all standard IRCC admissibility requirements

Those holding visitor records or study permits, or those who received their work permit after February 28, 2025, are not eligible for the extension.

Application Process

Eligible applicants can receive work permits for up to 2 years, provided that the permit does not exceed the expiry date of their passport.

Standard processing fees apply, ranging from $155 to $355 depending on the permit type and biometrics requirements.

Applicants must follow a step-by-step application process, including checking their passport expiry date, creating or accessing an IRCC account, gathering necessary documents, and submitting the application before the deadline.

Final Deadline and What Happens Next

The final deadline to submit applications for the work permit extension is March 31, 2027. It is advised not to wait until the last minute to avoid delays.

If an application is submitted before the current permit expires, the applicant enters maintained status, allowing them to stay and work in Canada legally while the application is processed. However, if the application is refused, the individual must leave Canada.

Iranian Community in Canada

Canada is home to a significant Iranian diaspora population, estimated between 200,000 to 400,000 individuals. The community is prominent in cities like Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, with common professions including healthcare, tech, engineering, and academia.
