Minimum wage increases in Canada in 2026: what changes on April 1 and later dates

Canadianow- Editor

Several provinces and territories have confirmed minimum wage increases in 2026. The biggest group of changes takes effect on April 1, 2026, with more increases scheduled later in the year.

This matters because minimum wage rules are provincial/territorial for most jobs, while the federal minimum wage applies only to federally regulated workplaces (banks, telecom, interprovincial transport, etc.).

Minimum wage increases confirmed for April 1, 2026

These jurisdictions have official announcements for April 1, 2026:

  • Nova Scotia: $16.75/hour on April 1, 2026 (and $17.00/hour on Oct 1, 2026)

  • Prince Edward Island: $17.00/hour on April 1, 2026

Confirmed increases later in 2026

  • Quebec: $16.60/hour starting May 1, 2026

  • British Columbia: $18.25/hour starting June 1, 2026

  • Ontario: Ontario’s current system ties changes to an annual process, with minimum wage rates typically effective October 1. As of today (March 9, 2026), Ontario’s official page confirms the current legal rate and how the adjustments work, but the Oct 1, 2026 rate may not be posted yet.

What about the federal minimum wage on April 1, 2026?

The federal minimum wage is adjusted annually based on CPI and applies only to federally regulated private-sector workplaces. The Government of Canada posted the last confirmed increase (to $17.75 on April 1, 2025). If the 2026 number is not yet published, treat any “expected” rate as not final until ESDC posts it.
