Alberta Express Entry Stream: Eligibility and AAIP Worker EOI Process

Many people search for the “Alberta Express Entry Stream” and find old information about the previous Notification of Interest (NOI) approach. Alberta now uses a Worker Expression of Interest (EOI) system for AAIP worker streams. Since September 30, 2024, you can only apply if you are invited, and you must first submit a Worker EOI.
This guide explains who can qualify, how selection works, and what to expect in 2026 without false promises.

What is the Alberta Express Entry Stream?

The Alberta Express Entry Stream is a provincial nomination option for candidates who already have an active profile in Canada’s federal Express Entry pool. Alberta may invite qualified candidates who match provincial priorities (including targeted pathways like health care, tech, and law enforcement).

If Alberta nominates you, a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to your Express Entry profile. This usually makes it much easier to receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA), but it is still not a guarantee.

Who is eligible for the Alberta Express Entry Stream?

Alberta lists the core eligibility rules clearly. You must:

  • Have an active Express Entry profile

  • Qualify under at least one federal program: CEC, FSWP, or FSTP

  • Have a minimum CRS score of 300

  • Have a primary occupation that fits an Alberta pathway or a provincial priority

  • Intend to live and work permanently in Alberta

  • Meet Alberta job-offer/employment rules if you are invited based on having an Alberta job offer

Who is not eligible?

Alberta also lists common ineligibility cases, including if:

  • Your primary occupation is on Alberta’s ineligible occupations list (linked from Alberta’s official pages)

  • You are a refugee claimant or in a removal/appeal process

  • You already have an active AAIP nomination

  • You are restricted due to misrepresentation

How the AAIP Worker EOI system works (important changes)

1) You submit a Worker EOI first (free)

As of Sept 30, 2024, you must submit a Worker EOI to be placed in Alberta’s pool. There is no fee to submit the EOI. Alberta scores and ranks EOIs using a points grid.

Reality check: Alberta states it has full discretion. Submitting an EOI does not guarantee you will be invited, even if you meet the basics. Alberta may also invite you to a different AAIP stream than the one you selected.

2) Alberta selects candidates through draws (not scheduled)

AAIP draws are not regularly scheduled. Alberta updates draw results as needed and does not publish full draw parameters.

For 2026, Alberta says it will prioritize occupations in key sectors such as health care, technology, construction, manufacturing, aviation, agriculture, and Rural Renewal communities.

3) If invited, timelines are strict

If Alberta invites you to apply:

  • You have 15 days to start your AAIP application

  • Then you must submit within 30 days after you start

This is one of the biggest “missed deadline” problems applicants face.

Does the Alberta Express Entry Stream require a job offer?

Not always.

Some selections are connected to job offers and employer needs, and Alberta says you and your employer must meet Alberta’s job offer and employment requirements if you are invited based on an Alberta job offer.

If you do have a job offer, it must meet Alberta’s official job offer rules (bona fide offer, verifiable employer, etc.).

Fees: Alberta + federal (IRCC)

Alberta (AAIP) fee

Alberta’s AAIP fee schedule shows $1,500 for worker stream applications, including the Alberta Express Entry Stream (effective April 1, 2025).

Federal (IRCC) PR fees after you receive an ITA

IRCC’s fee list shows $1,525 for economic immigration (including provincial nominees): $950 processing + $575 right of permanent residence fee.

Processing time: what you can realistically expect

Alberta stage (nomination decision)

Alberta does not promise fixed timelines. Instead, it publishes what dates it is currently assessing and how many applications are in process for each AAIP pathway. This changes often, so check Alberta’s AAIP processing information page before planning your next steps.

IRCC stage (permanent residence after ITA)

IRCC states that Express Entry candidates have 60 days to submit the PR application after receiving an ITA.
IRCC’s processing standard for Express Entry-sourced applications is six months for 80% of cases, but real timelines can still vary by case complexity and volume.

Settlement funds: do you need proof of funds?

This depends on which federal Express Entry program you qualify under.

IRCC says proof of funds is required to meet minimum requirements for FSWP and FSTP.
If you qualify under CEC, proof of funds is usually not required under Express Entry rules, but you should still keep your profile accurate and follow IRCC’s instructions for your situation.

Internal guidance (for Canadianow readers)

Before you rely on this pathway, make sure you understand these three points:

  • CRS 300 is only the minimum eligibility. Alberta selection is based on Worker EOI ranking and provincial priorities.

  • If your Express Entry profile expires soon, Alberta warns you may be less likely to be selected; keep your profile updated. Alberta also explains how some applicants can submit an updated profile if it expires during AAIP processing.

  • Draws are targeted and not predictable. Use Alberta’s draw history and processing page as your “source of truth,” not social media posts.

Reality check (read this before you plan around AAIP)

  • Meeting the minimum rules (like CRS 300) does not mean you will be invited. Alberta clearly says it does not guarantee an EOI will be processed or that you will receive an invitation.

  • AAIP draws are targeted, not regular, and Alberta does not publish full draw parameters.

  • Budget for both provincial and federal fees, and plan for delays. IRCC processing times are historical estimates and can be longer for some applicants.
