If you are coming to Canada to study, one of your first questions is whether you can work. The answer is yes — under specific conditions that vary by work type.

On-Campus Work: Unlimited Hours, No Extra Permit

Full-time students at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) can work on campus without a separate work permit — no hour limit. This includes jobs with your institution directly, private businesses physically on campus, and teaching or research assistant positions.

Off-Campus Work: 24 Hours Per Week During Academic Sessions

Eligible international students can work up to 24 hours per week off-campus during regular academic sessions without a separate work permit. During scheduled breaks, the limit is removed — unlimited hours. Your study permit itself authorizes this off-campus work if issued after June 2014 without restrictions.

Check Your Study Permit Conditions

Look at your permit document for language like ‘May accept employment’ (authorized) or ‘May not work off-campus’ (restricted). If you have a restriction, contact IRCC before starting any off-campus work.

Co-op and Internship Work

Mandatory co-op or internship placements require a separate co-op work permit. Apply for it with your study permit or before the placement begins. Co-op hours are not counted against the 24-hour weekly limit.

After Graduation: The PGWP

After completing an eligible program, you can apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit — an open work permit for up to 3 years. It must be applied for separately and is not automatic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I start working as soon as I arrive?
A: Yes, once your program has started and your study permit is valid. On-campus from day one; off-campus from the time your program begins.

Q: Do I need a SIN to work?
A: Yes — apply at Service Canada within your first week. Bring your study permit and passport.

Bottom Line

Your study permit authorizes on-campus work (unlimited) and off-campus work (up to 24 hours/week during term, unlimited during breaks) without a separate work permit. Check your permit conditions, get your SIN immediately, and stay within the limits to protect your immigration pathway.
