Updated July 2026. With hundreds of thousands of work permits set to expire across Canada in 2025-2026, temporary residents have more options than “leave the country” — here are the realistic paths available.
1. Apply for Permanent Residency
Express Entry remains the dominant PR pathway. If you qualify under the Canadian Experience Class, Federal Skilled Worker, or a Provincial Nominee Program, applying for PR removes the permit-expiry problem entirely.
2. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)
Many provinces have streams for workers already employed locally. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, making an ITA almost certain.
3. Extend Your Current Work Permit
If you still meet the requirements of your current permit, apply for an extension before it expires — if submitted on time, you can generally keep working while IRCC processes it (maintained status).
4. A New LMIA-Based Work Permit
An employer can support a new employer-specific work permit through a Labour Market Impact Assessment.
5. Bridging Open Work Permit
If you’ve already applied for PR, you may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit, letting you keep working while your PR application is finalized.
6. Return to School
Enrolling in an eligible study program (often a master’s, given federal caps on study permits) extends your legal status as a study permit holder.
7. Switch to Visitor Status
If no immediate work option exists, switching to visitor status can keep you legally in Canada while you plan your next move — though you cannot work on visitor status.
8. Status Restoration
If your permit has already expired, IRCC allows a 90-day restoration window to apply to restore your work, study, or visitor status — don’t wait past this window.
9. Humanitarian and Compassionate (H&C) Applications
Reserved for exceptional hardship cases. Approval rates are low, and it doesn’t provide work authorization automatically.
10. Refugee Claims
Only applicable if you have a genuine fear of persecution in your home country — this is not a general-purpose status extension route.
The most important step: act before your permit expires, not after. Options like extensions and bridging permits require timely applications, and the 90-day restoration window only exists if you’re not too far past expiry.
