Updated September 2026. A post-graduation work permit is a one-time document. When it ends, your right to work ends with it — unless you have already filed for something else. The options depend less on your situation than on how much time is left, because most of them take months to line up. This guide is organized around that clock.
Quick Answer
You generally cannot extend or renew a PGWP (the one exception is a PGWP shortened by passport expiry), and you get only one PGWP in your lifetime. Before it expires you need another route: a Bridging Open Work Permit once your PR application has passed IRCC’s completeness check; an employer-specific work permit (usually needing an LMIA); a spousal open work permit if your partner qualifies; a study permit; or a visitor record to stay without working. File before the expiry date and you keep working on maintained status while IRCC decides.
This guide explains general rules. It is not legal advice. With less than three months left, a licensed RCIC or immigration lawyer can help you pick the route most likely to be approved in time.
Decision Tree: How Much Time Do You Have?
12 months or more left
- Check your CEC eligibility now. You need 1,560 hours of paid work in a TEER 0–3 job in the last 3 years. TEER 4 and 5 jobs do not count, even though your PGWP allows them (why that matters). Count your hours with the CEC hours calculator.
- Get your language test done and create an Express Entry profile. Check your score in the CRS calculator.
- Look at provincial routes that fit your job and province (PNP overview, Ontario’s new stream, routes for TEER 4 and 5 jobs).
6 to 12 months left
- If you have an invitation or nomination: submit the PR application quickly. The BOWP only becomes available after the completeness check.
- If PR is uncertain: talk to your employer about an LMIA now. LMIA processing plus a work permit application can take several months.
- Check your passport’s expiry. Any new permit will stop at the passport date (details).
3 to 6 months left
- PR application passed completeness check? Apply for the BOWP now (BOWP guide).
- Employer supporting you? Push the LMIA through; you can apply for the work permit once it is approved.
- Partner working or studying in Canada? Check whether they qualify to support a spousal open work permit — eligibility was narrowed in 2025 and depends on their job or program.
Less than 3 months left
- File whatever you qualify for before the expiry date. An application submitted on time gives you maintained status: you keep working under your PGWP conditions until IRCC decides (proof for your employer).
- If you qualify for nothing that lets you work, apply for a visitor record before expiry so you can stay legally while you plan, but stop working when the PGWP ends.
Already expired
- Applied for something before it expired: you are on maintained status.
- Did not apply: you are out of status and cannot work. You have 90 days to apply for restoration with a permit you qualify for (restoration).
Your Options Compared
| Route | Who it fits | Lets you work? | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridging open work permit | Express Entry, PNP and some other PR applicants | Yes, any employer | Only after the PR application passes the completeness check |
| Employer-specific (LMIA) permit | Anyone with a supportive employer | Yes, that employer only | LMIA cost and time; tied to one job |
| Spousal open work permit | Partners of eligible workers or students | Yes | Eligibility depends on the partner’s job or program |
| Study permit | People returning to school | Limited hours during classes | No second PGWP afterwards |
| Visitor record | People who need time to leave or plan | No | Not a work authorization |
| PGWP extension | Only if your PGWP was shortened by passport expiry | Yes | Paper application; narrow eligibility |
Myths That Cost People Time
- “There’s a new 18-month PGWP extension.” Temporary PGWP extension policies existed in past years, but do not assume one exists. Check IRCC directly before relying on any claim.
- “I’ll get another PGWP after a new program.” IRCC issues the PGWP only once.
- “My PR application lets me keep working.” It does not, by itself. You need a work permit application filed before expiry.
- “You can only get a BOWP in the last four months.” That is an old rule. Current IRCC criteria focus on your PR application stage and your status, not a countdown.
Everything Else That Expires With Your PGWP
Your SIN and provincial health card usually carry your PGWP’s expiry date. See expired SIN on maintained status and health coverage by province, or map every date in the Status Expiry Timeline.
FAQ
Can I extend my PGWP?
Only if it was issued for less than you were eligible for because your passport was expiring. Otherwise, no.
I was laid off. Does that affect my PGWP?
No. The PGWP is an open permit and stays valid, but gaps in work slow down your CEC hours. See job loss during a PR application if you have already applied.
Can I stay in Canada after my PGWP expires if I stop working?
Yes, if you apply for a visitor record before the PGWP expires. You cannot work on visitor status.
