The “Lonely Canadian” rule is an informal name for a real sponsorship option that lets Canadian citizens and permanent residents with no immediate family in Canada sponsor one extended relative. It’s not a standalone official IRCC program — it’s a special eligibility category within Canada’s existing family sponsorship rules.
Who Qualifies as a “Lonely Canadian”
You may qualify if you are:
- 18 years of age or older
- A Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Without a spouse or common-law partner
- Without children you could otherwise sponsor
- Without a parent or grandparent living in Canada
In other words, this route exists specifically for people who genuinely have no other family member in Canada they could sponsor under the normal family class rules.
Who You Can Sponsor
Under this rule, you can generally sponsor one relative — regardless of the relative’s age — in these limited circumstances, since the usual “extended family” sponsorship categories don’t normally apply this broadly.
Financial Obligations
As with all family sponsorships, you must sign an undertaking committing to financially support the sponsored relative for a set period after they arrive — typically 10 years for this category. This is a serious, legally binding commitment, not a formality.
How to Apply
The application goes through the same family sponsorship channels as other relative sponsorships, but you’ll need to clearly demonstrate that you meet the “no other family in Canada” criteria. Given how narrow and specific the eligibility is, it’s worth reviewing your situation carefully — or speaking with an immigration consultant — before applying, since a technicality (like a distant cousin already in Canada not counting, or unclear documentation of your family situation) can affect eligibility.
