Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP): Current Status and Alternatives

The Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) is closed. IRCC states it ended on August 31, 2024 and is no longer accepting new applications. IRCC will continue processing applications received on or before that date.

This page is an update so readers don’t follow outdated “how to apply” steps.

Is RNIP accepting new applications?

No. IRCC’s RNIP pages are marked Closed and confirm no new applications are being accepted.

What if you applied before the program ended?

IRCC says it will continue processing RNIP applications that were received on or before August 31, 2024.

What replaced RNIP (current alternatives)

IRCC launched two newer community-based pathways:

1) Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP)

A permanent residence pathway for skilled workers who want to work and settle in selected rural and remote communities. IRCC says 14 communities were chosen and that communities approve certain employers.

2) Francophone Community Immigration Pilot (FCIP)

A PR pathway for French-speaking skilled workers who want to settle in selected Francophone minority communities outside Quebec. IRCC says 6 communities were chosen.

IRCC also provides a combined hub page for these Rural and Francophone Community Immigration pilots.

What to remove from old RNIP templates

If you’re updating an RNIP page, remove anything that sounds like:

  • “Apply now” or “new RNIP intake”

  • RNIP application checklists as if they’re current

Instead, make the page clearly say “RNIP is closed” and point to the official RCIP/FCIP pages.

FAQ

Is RNIP still open in 2026?
No. IRCC says RNIP ended August 31, 2024 and is not accepting new applications.

Can I still apply if I get a job offer in an RNIP community?
Not through RNIP. RNIP is closed. Check RCIP (or FCIP if you qualify in French) for current community-based options.

Where do I find the official updates?
Use IRCC’s RNIP closure page and the RCIP/FCIP program pages.

Reality check

RNIP cannot be used as a new immigration plan today because there is no open intake. If your goal is a community-based pathway, focus on RCIP or FCIP, and rely only on IRCC pages and participating community websites for employer/eligibility steps.
