Canadian Passport Moves Up in the Henley Rankings After New Visa-Free Access

Updated July 2026. The Canadian passport climbed from 8th to 7th place globally in the 2026 Henley Passport Index, after Canadians gained visa-free access to China.

What Changed

The February 2026 release of the index placed Canada 8th globally with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 181 destinations. By the March 2026 update, Canada had moved up to 7th place with access to 182 destinations — the improvement driven specifically by the introduction of visa-free entry to China for Canadian passport holders, allowing stays of up to 30 days without a visa.

How Canada Compares

The Canadian passport remains the strongest in North America, comfortably ahead of the United States, which sits in 10th place. Singapore continues to hold the top spot as the world’s most powerful passport overall.

Why the Ranking Matters

The Henley Passport Index ranks passports by the number of destinations their holders can access without a prior visa. A higher ranking generally means easier, more spontaneous international travel — relevant not just for Canadian citizens but for newcomers working toward citizenship, since it’s one of the practical benefits that comes with becoming a Canadian citizen rather than remaining a permanent resident.

What This Means If You’re Not Yet a Citizen

Permanent residents don’t get Canadian passport privileges — you need to travel on your existing citizenship’s passport (or a Canadian travel document in limited cases) until you become a Canadian citizen yourself. If visa-free travel is a priority for you, it’s one more reason to track your physical presence days toward citizenship eligibility as soon as you land as a PR.
