What Happens to Your Work Rights After Your PGWP Expires?

Your Post-Graduation Work Permit is running out. What happens to your right to work in Canada? This is one of the most time-sensitive situations in Canadian immigration — and acting too late has serious consequences.

The Hard Truth: PGWP Cannot Be Renewed

Unlike most work permits, the PGWP is a one-time document. You cannot simply extend or renew it. When it expires, your work authorization ends — unless you take specific action before that date.

This makes planning in advance of PGWP expiry absolutely critical.

Your Options Before Your PGWP Expires

Option 1: Apply for Permanent Residency (Best Option)

If you have accumulated 12 months of skilled Canadian work experience (NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3), you may qualify for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) through Express Entry. Applying for PR before your PGWP expires is the cleanest outcome — and many PGWP holders specifically time their program choice (2-year program = 3-year PGWP) to give themselves enough time to qualify for CEC.

Once you have a PR application in progress, you may also qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) — see below.

Option 2: Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

If your PGWP is expiring but you have a PR application in progress through Express Entry, you may qualify for a BOWP. This open work permit allows you to continue working while IRCC processes your PR application.

Requirements for BOWP:

  • You hold a valid work permit (or maintained status)
  • Your current permit is expiring within 4 months
  • You have an Express Entry application submitted and in progress

Apply for the BOWP before your PGWP expires — do not wait.

Option 3: Employer-Specific Work Permit

If you have a Canadian employer willing to support you, they can apply for an LMIA and you can transition from your PGWP to an employer-specific work permit. This requires your employer to go through the LMIA process (60–90 days) — so start this process well before your PGWP expiry.

Option 4: Study Permit (Return to School)

Some PGWP holders return to school in Canada — completing an additional credential generates a new PGWP based on the new program length. However, this only works if you enroll in a genuinely PGWP-eligible program and plan carefully. It is a viable strategy but not a shortcut.

Option 5: Leave Canada

If none of the above apply and your PGWP expires, you must leave Canada unless you have another valid status. Staying in Canada without valid status after your PGWP expires puts you in violation of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.

Maintained Status: A Temporary Safety Net

If you apply for a new work permit or PR before your PGWP expires, maintained status protects your right to work under the same conditions while the new application is processed — even after the PGWP’s expiry date passes.

Maintained status ends the moment IRCC makes a decision on your new application. If that decision is negative, you must stop working immediately.

Timeline: When to Start Planning

  • 12 months before PGWP expiry: Assess whether you qualify for CEC. Start your Express Entry profile.
  • 6 months before expiry: If PR pathway is uncertain, engage with an employer about LMIA-based permit or confirm BOWP eligibility.
  • 3–4 months before expiry: Apply for BOWP or employer-specific permit — before maintained status becomes your only protection.
  • Do not wait until the last month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I get a second PGWP?
A: No — PGWP is issued once per person. You cannot obtain a second PGWP even if you complete another Canadian program after your first one.

Q: What if I get laid off while on PGWP?
A: Your PGWP remains valid regardless of your employment status — it is not tied to a specific employer. You can look for a new job while your PGWP is valid. Unemployment does not affect your PGWP itself, only your ability to accumulate work experience for PR purposes.

Q: I have a few months of PGWP left. Can I still apply for PR?
A: Yes — apply for Express Entry now. If you receive an ITA and submit your PR application, you may qualify for a BOWP to bridge the gap while your PR is processed.

Bottom Line

A PGWP expiring is not a crisis if you plan for it. The best outcome is obtaining PR before the PGWP expires. The second-best is a BOWP keeping you working while PR is processed. The worst outcome is waiting until expiry without a plan and losing your work authorization. Start your PR timeline planning at least 12 months before your PGWP expires.
