Key facts
- Canadian resumes leave out a photo, age, marital status and your SIN.
- List jobs in reverse-chronological order, most recent first.
- Job Bank’s advice: keep it to two pages at most; one page is enough early in your career.
- Start bullets with an action verb and add a number wherever you can.
- Use the keywords from the job ad; tailor your resume for each application.
- Use Letter size (8.5 × 11 inches), not A4. Our PDF and Word files already do.
How does the resume builder work?
Upload your current CV as a PDF or Word file, or paste its text, and the builder fills in the form. Then fix anything it missed, pick a template and download a PDF or Word file. The preview updates as you type.
- Start fast: upload your old CV (PDF, Word .docx or text). It is read in your browser, so the file is never sent to us. It also recognizes headings and dates in French, Spanish and Turkish CVs.
- Fill in the gaps: go section by section with the Next button. Pick dates from month and year lists, add skills with one click from suggestions based on your job titles, and let “Write a draft for me” start your summary.
- Design: pick one of eight templates, a colour and a font. Move sections up or down and hide the ones you do not need.
- Improve: the Resume check scores your resume and lists what to fix. The job matcher shows which keywords from a job ad are missing.
- Download: PDF (choose “Save as PDF” in the print window), Word (.doc) or plain text.
- Come back later: your work is saved in this browser. To move it to another device, use More → Save my data to a file.
The importer sorts your CV into sections by their headings and dates. Scanned CVs (images) have no text to read, and two-column layouts can mix up lines. Always check each section before you download, and translate anything that is not in English.
Which resume template should I choose?
Classic, Minimal and Timeline are safe choices for online applications because applicant tracking systems read one-column layouts best. Modern and Bold use a sidebar and suit resumes you email or hand over; Executive and Elegant suit senior roles; Compact fits a long career onto two pages.
| Template | Best for |
|---|---|
| Classic | Online applications and ATS. One column, centred header. |
| Modern | Emailing or networking. Coloured header and a skills sidebar. |
| Executive | Senior and management roles. Serif name, clean section lines. |
| Compact | Long careers. Smaller type and tighter spacing to stay within two pages. |
| Minimal | Any field. Black and white, section labels in a narrow left column. |
| Timeline | Showing career progression. Dates sit in their own column. |
| Bold | Creative and customer-facing roles. Full-height coloured sidebar. |
| Elegant | Law, finance, education. Centred serif type with fine rules. |
What makes a Canadian resume different?
Canadian employers expect a concise, reverse-chronological resume without personal details such as a photo, date of birth, marital status or Social Insurance Number, focused on measurable achievements.
| Include | Leave out |
|---|---|
| Name, city and province, phone, email, LinkedIn | Photo |
| Professional summary (2 to 4 sentences) | Date of birth or age |
| Work experience with achievements, including jobs abroad | Marital status, nationality, religion, political views |
| Education, with a credential assessment if you have one | Social Insurance Number (SIN) |
| Skills, certifications, languages, volunteer work | References (give them when asked) |
Volunteer work in Canada is worth adding as its own section, especially if you do not have Canadian work experience yet.
How do I write strong bullet points?
Start each bullet with an action verb, say what you did, and add a number that shows the result. Keep each bullet to one or two lines, with about 3 to 5 bullets for recent jobs.
| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Responsible for answering customer calls | Resolved 60+ customer calls a day with a 94% satisfaction score |
| Helped train new staff | Trained 6 new agents, cutting their ramp-up time by 2 weeks |
| Worked on the order process | Redesigned the order form, reducing processing time by 20% |
The builder counts how many of your bullets start with an action verb and include a number, and suggests verbs you can insert with one click.
How do I get past applicant tracking systems (ATS)?
Use standard section headings, a one-column layout and the exact keywords from the job posting. Paste the job ad into “Match a job posting” to see which keywords your resume already has and which are missing.
Add missing keywords only where they are true for you, in your summary, skills or bullet points. For online forms that ask you to paste your resume, use More → Copy plain text.
Do I need a cover letter in Canada?
Often, yes: many Canadian employers still read them, and some postings require one. Keep it to one page, about 250 to 400 words, written for that specific job.
Switch to the Cover letter tab, enter the company and job title, and click “Draft it from my resume”. The builder writes a first draft from your experience and skills; replace the parts in [brackets] and make it your own.
How long should a resume be in Canada?
Two pages at most. One page is usually enough with under about 8 to 10 years of experience. The preview shows where each page breaks.

Questions
Resume builder FAQ
Is this resume builder really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no paywall at download and no limit on downloads. PDF, Word and plain text are all free.
Do you store or upload my resume data?
No. The tool runs in your browser and saves your work only on this device, so you can come back to it. Nothing is sent to our servers. Use “Start over” to clear it, for example on a shared computer.
How do I download my resume as a PDF?
Click Download PDF, then choose “Save as PDF” as the destination in the print window. The PDF is Letter size and the text stays selectable, which applicant tracking systems need.
Should a Canadian resume include a photo?
No. Canadian employers generally do not expect a photo, date of birth or marital status, and Job Bank advises never to include your Social Insurance Number.
Can I convert my existing CV into Canadian format?
Yes. Click Upload CV and choose your PDF or Word (.docx) file, or paste its text. The builder fills in the form; review each section, translate anything that is not in English, then download your Canadian-format resume. Your file is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Can I make a cover letter too?
Yes. Open the Cover letter tab, add the company and job title, and click “Draft it from my resume” for a first draft you can edit and download.
