Bank Holidays in Canada 2027: When Banks Close and Payments Stop

Canadian bank holiday dates for 2027 showing when branches close and payment processing stops, including the extended Christmas shutdown.

Banks in Canada close on federal holidays regardless of what your province observes, which is why a day off work does not always mean a closed bank — and occasionally the reverse. If you have a payment landing, a transfer to send, or a cheque to clear, these are the dates that matter in 2027.

Bank Holidays in Canada 2027

Branches and payment processing are closed on:

  • Friday, January 1 — New Year’s Day
  • Friday, March 26 — Good Friday
  • Monday, May 24 — Victoria Day
  • Thursday, July 1 — Canada Day
  • Monday, August 2 — Civic Holiday (varies by province)
  • Monday, September 6 — Labour Day
  • Thursday, September 30 — National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • Monday, October 11 — Thanksgiving
  • Thursday, November 11 — Remembrance Day (varies by province)
  • Monday, December 27 — Christmas Day observed
  • Tuesday, December 28 — Boxing Day observed

The Christmas Shutdown in 2027 Is Longer Than Usual

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday in 2027. Banks observe the substitute days, which pushes closures to Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28.
Combined with the weekend, that produces a four-day stretch with no payment processing: Saturday December 25 through Tuesday December 28. If you have rent due, a bill on pre-authorised debit, or an international transfer landing around then, initiate it before Friday December 24.

Closed Branch Does Not Mean Frozen Money

Two things get confused here:

  • Interac e-Transfer generally works on holidays — it moves between accounts without clearing
  • Debit and credit cards work normally
  • Cheque clearing, wire transfers, direct deposits and pre-authorised debits do not process — they queue and settle on the next business day

So a paycheque scheduled to deposit on a holiday will land the business day before or after, depending on your employer’s payroll timing.

How This Interacts With Benefit Payments

This is precisely why CRA benefit dates shift around. The CRA moves a payment to the preceding business day when its normal date falls on a weekend or bank holiday — it does not delay it. That is why several 2027 benefit dates land on a Friday rather than the usual number.
The practical implication is the opposite of what people fear: benefits arrive early around holidays, not late.

Provincial Differences Worth Knowing

The August Civic Holiday is not a bank closure everywhere — it depends on the province, and it carries different names across the country. Remembrance Day is similar: banks close in provinces where it is a statutory holiday, and many federally regulated institutions close regardless.
If your transaction is time-sensitive and falls near either date, confirm with your own branch rather than assuming national uniformity.
