ODSP and Ontario Works both pay at the end of the month for the month ahead, which is why the money arrives before the period it covers rather than after. If you are budgeting month to month, that timing matters more than the amount.
Here are the expected 2027 dates.
ODSP and Ontario Works Payment Dates 2027
Payments are issued on the last business day of the month, covering the following month:
- January 29 — Friday (for February)
- February 26 — Friday
- March 31 — Wednesday
- April 30 — Friday
- May 31 — Monday
- June 30 — Wednesday
- July 30 — Friday
- August 31 — Tuesday
- September 30 — Thursday
- October 29 — Friday
- November 30 — Tuesday
- December 31 — Friday
These follow the standard end-of-month schedule. Because ODSP is a provincial program administered through banking channels that observe federal holidays, confirm any date falling near a holiday against the official Ontario schedule before relying on it.
Direct Deposit vs Cheque Changes the Date
With direct deposit, funds are generally available on the issue date. Cheques are mailed and take additional days, and the mailing date is not the same as the deposit date.
Anyone on ODSP or Ontario Works who is still receiving cheques and has a bank account is losing several days each month for no reason. Switching to direct deposit is handled through your caseworker or the MyBenefits portal.
What Changes Your Amount Month to Month
Unlike CRA benefits, which are recalculated once a year, social assistance is reassessed continuously against reported income and circumstances:
- Employment earnings, after the applicable exemption
- Changes in household composition
- Housing cost changes — the shelter component is tied to what you actually pay
- Other income, including CPP disability, EI, or support payments
Income earned in one month typically affects the payment two months later, which is the part that surprises people. A good month at work in March shows up as a reduced payment in May, not April.
ODSP and Ontario Works Are Not the Same Program
Ontario Works is short-term financial assistance with employment obligations attached. ODSP is for people with a substantiated disability, pays more, and has different rules around earnings exemptions and asset limits.
Moving from Ontario Works to ODSP requires a Disability Determination Package, and the assessment takes time. People often remain on Ontario Works during that process and are transferred once approved.
Interaction With Federal Benefits
CRA benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit (now the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit) are generally not deducted from social assistance in Ontario. The Canada Disability Benefit’s interaction with provincial programs has been a live policy question, so check the current treatment rather than assuming.
