Key facts
- FSW is pass or fail: you need at least 67 of 100 points.
- Before points, you need one year of continuous skilled work (TEER 0 to 3) in the last 10 years and CLB 7 in all four abilities.
- Language is the largest factor (28 points), then education (25) and experience (15).
- The 67 points only make you eligible. Your CRS score decides whether you are invited.
- FSW applicants usually need proof of funds.
How do the FSW 67 points work?
IRCC scores six factors out of 100: language (28), education (25), work experience (15), age (12), arranged employment (10) and adaptability (10). You need at least 67 to be eligible.
| Factor | Maximum | How points are given |
|---|---|---|
| Language | 28 | First language: 6 per ability at CLB 9+, 5 at CLB 8, 4 at CLB 7. Second language: 4 if CLB 5+ in all four. |
| Education | 25 | PhD 25; master’s or professional degree 23; two or more credentials (one 3+ years) 22; 3+ year program 21; two-year 19; one-year 15; secondary 5. |
| Work experience | 15 | 1 year 9; 2–3 years 11; 4–5 years 13; 6+ years 15. |
| Age | 12 | 18 to 35: 12; then one point less per year (36: 11 … 46: 1); 47+: 0. |
| Arranged employment | 10 | A qualifying job offer of at least one year, usually supported by an LMIA. |
| Adaptability | 10 | Canadian study or work (you or your spouse), spouse’s language, relatives in Canada, arranged employment. |
What does a typical FSW calculation look like?
A 30-year-old with a master’s degree, CLB 9 in all four English abilities and three years of skilled work scores 70 points without a job offer, which passes.
| Language: CLB 9 in all four abilities (4 × 6) | 24 |
| Education: master’s degree | 23 |
| Work experience: 3 years | 11 |
| Age: 30 | 12 |
| Arranged employment | 0 |
| Adaptability | 0 |
| Total (pass mark 67) | 70 |
What do I need before the points count?
You need at least one year of continuous full-time (or equal part-time) paid work in a TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation in the last 10 years, CLB 7 in all four abilities, and an education credential, assessed by an ECA if it is from outside Canada.
- Work must be in one occupation, matching the duties in its NOC description.
- Foreign education counts only with an Educational Credential Assessment.
- You must show proof of funds unless you are authorized to work in Canada and have a valid job offer.
What can I do if I score below 67?
Improve your language results first: moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four abilities adds 8 points. Get every credential assessed, and check other programs that do not use this grid.
- Two credentials, one of them 3+ years, score higher than a single degree (22 vs 21).
- A second official language at CLB 5+ adds 4 points.
- The Canadian Experience Class and provincial programs have their own requirements.
Is the FSW 67-point score the same as the CRS score?
No. The 67-point grid only decides whether you can enter the Express Entry pool through FSW. Once you are in the pool, you are ranked by your CRS score out of 1,200.
Next, estimate your ranking with the CRS calculator and compare it with recent Express Entry draws.
