What money steps matter most in my first year?
File a tax return for your arrival year, apply for the CCB and the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit when you arrive, and open a TFSA once you are a resident.
- Benefits depend on filing: most are calculated from your tax return, even with little income.
- Temporary residents usually qualify for the CCB after 18 months in Canada; permanent residents right away.
- RRSP room is based on the previous year’s Canadian earned income, so newcomers usually have none in their first year.
How do I plan a budget before I move?
Start from take-home pay, not gross salary, then compare rent and daily costs in the cities you are considering.
Run your expected salary through the salary calculator, then use the cost of living calculator to see what is left after rent, utilities and groceries. If you will drive, add an estimate from the car insurance estimator; newcomers often pay more until they build Canadian driving history.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
Are these calculators accurate for 2026?
They use 2026 federal and provincial tax rates and the July 2026 to June 2027 benefit amounts. Each tool shows the date of its data.
Do I need to file taxes to get benefits?
Yes. Most federal and provincial benefits are calculated from your tax return, so file every year, even with little or no income.
Can work permit holders get benefits?
Many benefits depend on tax residency rather than status. The CCB is the main exception: temporary residents usually qualify after 18 months in Canada.
Do the tools store my financial information?
No. The calculators run in your browser and nothing you enter is sent to our servers.
