2027 is a reasonable year for long weekends. Six statutory holidays land on a Friday or Monday, and one produces a rare four-day stretch. Two others fall mid-week and give you nothing.

- January 1–3 — New Year’s Day falls on a Friday, opening the year with a three-day weekend
- March 26–29 — Good Friday on March 26 and Easter Monday on March 29. Four consecutive days for federal employees, Quebec workers and anyone whose employer observes both
- May 22–24 — Victoria Day, the traditional start of cottage season
- July 31 – August 2 — Civic Holiday, known by different names depending on your province
- September 4–6 — Labour Day, the last long weekend of summer
- October 9–11 — Thanksgiving
The Ones That Do Not Work Out
Three holidays fall on a Thursday in 2027, which means a single day off rather than a long weekend:
- Canada Day — Thursday, July 1
- Truth and Reconciliation Day — Thursday, September 30
- Remembrance Day — Thursday, November 11
Each of these is a natural candidate for a single vacation day on the Friday, turning it into four days off for the cost of one. Canada Day in particular — booking Friday July 2 gives you July 1–4.
The December Situation
Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday in 2027. Most jurisdictions substitute the following Monday and Tuesday, meaning December 27 and 28 become the observed days off.
Combined with the weekend, that is a four-day break from Saturday December 25 through Tuesday December 28 for most employees. Taking December 29, 30 and 31 as vacation extends it through New Year’s Day 2028, which falls on a Saturday.
Where the August Long Weekend Actually Applies
The first Monday in August is the least consistent holiday in the country. It is a statutory holiday in some provinces and a municipal or optional day in others, and the name changes as you cross borders — British Columbia Day, Saskatchewan Day, New Brunswick Day, Natal Day in Nova Scotia, Heritage Day in Alberta.
In Ontario it is widely observed but is not a statutory holiday under provincial employment standards, which means holiday pay entitlement is not automatic. Confirm with your employer rather than assuming.
Planning Ahead
Travel and accommodation prices spike on these six weekends, particularly Victoria Day and Labour Day. If you are planning to travel, booking well before the season starts is the difference between a reasonable rate and a holiday premium.
For newcomers, the Victoria Day and Labour Day weekends are also when most of the country effectively shuts down for leisure — a useful thing to know before scheduling anything that requires other people to be available.
