How the Process Works
- Submit your application and pay the $85 biometric fee along with your application fees
- IRCC issues a Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) — you cannot give biometrics without it. It usually arrives within days of submission
- Book an appointment at an authorized collection point:
- Inside Canada: designated Service Canada offices
- Outside Canada: Visa Application Centres (VAC), or US Application Support Centers if you are in the United States
- Bring your BIL and passport to the appointment. The process takes about 15 minutes
- You have 30 days from the BIL date to complete biometrics — your application does not move until you do

If you are exempt but accidentally pay the fee, IRCC refunds it automatically — eventually. Avoid paying when the tool says your biometrics are still valid.
Common Problems and Fixes
- No VAC appointment slots for weeks: check nearby cities; VAC capacity varies. Inside Canada, Service Canada slots refresh frequently — check early mornings.
- BIL never arrived: check your IRCC account messages, not just email. The BIL appears in the account first.
- Fingerprints rejected for quality: manual workers and older applicants sometimes have worn fingerprints. The collection point will retry; persistent failures are documented and IRCC proceeds with what is capturable.
- Gave biometrics but tool says not found: matching is by passport. If you renewed your passport since, bring both old and new numbers when checking.
- 30-day deadline impossible (no VAC in your country): request an extension through IRCC webform with proof; travel to a neighbouring country’s VAC is sometimes the practical answer.
Biometrics at the Border?
You cannot give biometrics at a Canadian port of entry for an application in process. The exception: certain applicants who are eligible to apply for a work permit at the border may complete biometrics there as part of that same-day process. For everyone else, the BIL-then-appointment flow is mandatory.
